Ryan Adams - “Two” (from “Easy Tiger”)
I had the pleasure of seeing Ryan Adams perform at the Music Hall in Kansas City last night. His show was entirely acoustic and it was absolutely perfect. “Two” has always been one of my favorite songs and it was flawless when he sang it last night. It almost brought a tear to my eye.

This was the second time I’ve seen Josh Ritter in concert, and it was even better than when I saw him in 2009. I was happy when I found out the opener was Scott Hutchison (lead singer of Frightened Rabbit), but I was beyond THRILLED when Scott announced he was doing an acoustic, request-only set. He could not believe so many of us actually knew of Frightened Rabbit, and seemed genuinely happy when we all started shouting out song requests.
When Scott was finished with his incredible set, Josh took the stage and blew us all away. That man has more energy than anyone else I’ve ever seen.
I was hoping Josh would play “The Curse,” but didn’t really think he would. When he started playing it, I was smiling so hard my face hurt. I ended up crying throughout most of the song (you will see why when I post it as the 3rd most romantic song in my iTunes library).
Near the end of the set, Josh had the house turn the lights off. He stepped away from the mic and sang all 9.5 minutes of “Thin Blue Flame.” It was BEAUTIFUL. I never thought I’d get to see him play it in concert.
Scott and his brother (also from Frightened Rabbit) joined Josh and The Royal City Band onstage during “Rattling Locks.” It was so much fun! Later on, Scott joined Josh again for a cover of the Everly Brothers’ song, “The Stories We Could Tell.” Speaking of covers, Josh also covered Modest Mouse as well as “Pale Blue Eyes” by The Velvet Underground.

The Grace Potter and the Nocturnals concert was AMAZING. Chamberlin opened for them, and I was pleasantly surprised. Near the end of the show, Chamberlin put on some hilarious costumes and joined Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on stage for a rocking cover of Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love.” I took partial video of the cover and it can be found here.

Jenny Owen Youngs was absolutely amazing in concert. She was the sole reason I went to the show (she opened for Wakey!Wakey!, a band with which I’m not familiar) and I left as soon as she was done because I had to work early the next morning.
After a song or two, Jenny had to switch guitars, leaving her with a lightning bolt guitar strap. A funny story ensued. Despite what you said, Jenny, you WERE able to pull it off! :P
She played a new song “Pirates” from an upcoming album. I took partial video (the song was way better than the video shows): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPMPVxskzN4
I’m not familiar with any Motion City Soundtrack material, but she covered one of their songs and it sounded pretty cool.
At one point, Rob from Wakey!Wakey! joined Jenny on stage for a song. He played the violin, and it was so much fun. Rob and Jenny:
I was front row standing and thoroughly enjoyed her hilarious comments in between songs. I also got the chance to chat with her a little before the show, and she is wicked funny. If you get the chance to see her, DO IT.

Concert Review: The National @ Uptown Theater In KC (9/29/10)
I saw The National + Owen Pallett last night at Uptown Theater in Kansas City. I wasn’t allowed to take my camera in so I didn’t get any pictures, but I can still talk about it!
(not my picture)
Owen Pallett—boring songs, excellent musician/performer. Owen was amazing but I just could not feel connected to his songs. Maybe if he had just played and not involved singing/lyrics, I would have enjoyed it more. He’s a fantastic musician but I nearly fell asleep.
The National were AMAZING. I couldn’t believe how incredible the entire performance was. In the encore when they played “Mr. November,” Matt (the lead singer) started crowd surfing as he sang the line, “I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.” The crowd went wild and it was so fun to watch (I was up in the balcony).
In late 2008 or so, “Boxer” was the album I listened to the most. So when they played “Slow Show” and “Fake Empire,” I cried. Those sings strike a nerve with me and it’s hard to explain. The entire band just sounded absolutely incredible, and I was overcome with emotion. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you go see The National if they play anywhere near you.

The Midlake/Rogue Wave show was AWESOME. The opening act was a band called Peter Wolf Crier, and they were surprisingly good. Midlake played next, and they RIPPED IT UP. So many guitars, so much guitar riffing…I nearly had a guitargasm. Rogue Wave was the final act and were also fantastic. They came back for an extended encore because the audience kept shouting requests. It was pretty great.
Highlights: “Roscoe” (Midlake), “California” (Rogue Wave, last song of the encore)

I went on a last-minute road trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to see Tegan and Sara play a special show—acoustic set + full-band set. It was well worth the drive.
I was worried I’d be the only one of my friends at the show (a bunch of us met traveling to shows; I became part of it in late 2007) but I was delighted when I found out Scott would be at the show. I met up with Scott and his dad, and we made our way into Cain’s Ballroom. It reminded me a bit like a gymnasium, but it worked well for the concert.
Ever since I fainted at The New Pornographers show in August, I’ve been paranoid about standing room only shows. Once we walked in, we found some benches along the wall and hung back to watch the show from a kind of outsider’s perspective. Scott and I have both seen Tegan and Sara from the front row before so we were perfectly fine with hanging back and soaking it in. It was a different experience, but no less enjoyable. It was my second favorite show of the year (first would be the Des Moines special show) and I’m glad I decided to make an impromptu trip.
They are such sweethearts and show so much gratitude to just be doing what they love to do. I hope everyone gets a chance to see them at least once.
My last T&S show of 2010 went out with one big rad BANG. Rock the fuck on.
Highlights: Monday Monday Monday (acoustic), Divided (I haven’t seen them play this at a show since late 2007), Northshore

I saw Marina & the Diamonds in Chicago this past Thursday. Marina is absolutely amazing in concert. The audience sang along almost the entire time, Marina danced around the stage, and her voice was incredible.
The 10-hour drive (each way) was well worth the experience. The opening band was Young the Giant, and they were terrific in their own right.
Highlights: I Am Not A Robot (crowd sang along the entire time), Obsessions (solo on the piano), Mowgli’s Road (encore)
