The Cars - “Just What I Needed” (from “Complete Greatest Hits”)
I just talked about how much I love The Cars in the last music news post, so I decided to post one of their songs. I LOVE THIS SONG.
My friend Tiffiny randomly mailed me a vinyl she found in a thrift shop and I fell in love with it. That album was The Cars’ self-titled record. They were amazing. I’m so excited for their new LP. Their greatest hits album is SO worth buying.
Key tracks: Just What I Needed, My Best Friend’s Girl, Moving In Stereo
+TEGAN AND SARA+ Go to The Ruckus to watch: “Tegan and Sara discuss how important women being involved in all areas of the music industry is and how they’d like to see homophobia become a thing of the past.” It’s a pretty cool video.
+ROBYN+ Robyn has released her ~sexy~ new video for “Indestructible.” I’ve talked about it before, but you NEED to check out her newest albums (“Body Talk Pt. 1,” “Body Talk Pt. 2,” and “Body Talk Pt. 3”).
+IRON & WINE+ Iron & Wine will release a new album, “Kiss Each Other Clean,” early in 2011. On November 26 (Black Friday), Iron & Wine will release a three-song single, exclusively available at independent record stores.
+THE CARS+ I FUCKING LOVE THE CARS. They were so amazing in the 70s and 80s. This excited me more than it probably should have. Sample The Cars’ first LP in 23 years. I have one thing to say: EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
+FRIGHTENED RABBIT, THE NATIONAL, INTERPOL+ Frightened Rabbit, The National, and Interpol cover The Philistines Jr. The compilation “If A Lot Of Bands Play In The Woods…?” will accompany The Philistines Jr.’s newest album “If A Band Plays In The Woods…?” (which came out October 19). The compilation will feature a collection of covers and remixes.
+MARINA & THE DIAMONDS+ Watch Marina & the Diamonds perform “Shampain” live at Reading and Leeds Festival 2010.
I Am Arrows - “Green Grass” (from “Sun Comes Up Again”)
Former Razorlight drummer, Andy Burrows, formed I Am Arrows last year, and the album “Sun Comes Up Again” is pretty fantastic.
"Green Grass" is funky and fun, while "Bruises" is gorgeous and slow-paced. I can’t get enough.
I highly recommend you obtain this album in one way or another. It came out less than a month ago, and I have had it on heavy rotation. You won’t regret it! And if you DO regret it, then I don’t wish to know you…
Sara Quin feat. Kaki King & Ted Gowans - “Sweetness Follows” (R.E.M. cover)
Sara (of Tegan and Sara) covered R.E.M.’s “Sweetness Follows” a few years ago for an R.E.M. “Automatic For The People” tribute album. I have to say, I like Sara’s version more than the original. It’s a great song all around, no matter the version.
Ted Gowans (the guitarist for Tegan and Sara) and Kaki King (guitar queen) helped Sara transform this song into her own style.
Vivek Shraya feat. Sara Quin - “Your Name” (from “If We’re Not Talking”)
Sara (of Tegan and Sara) collaborated with Vivek on his 2007 album, “If We’re Not Talking.” Tegan had previously collaborated with Vivek on his 2005 album, “A Composite Of Straight Lines” on a track called, “The Alphabet.” To be honest, I like “Your Name” much more.
Vivek Shraya is probably one of the best artists you’ve never heard. He’s fantastic and I highly recommend buying/downloading his albums.
Vivek and Rachael Cantu toured with Tegan and Sara around 2005 (not exactly sure) on the “So Jealous” tour and their friendship has produced some pretty cool tracks. Tegan with Vivek in 2005:
Tuna sent me this cover in 2008 sometime. I can’t remember exactly when, but I know I love it. She also emailed this cover to Kate Cooper (lead singer/guitarist of An Horse) who basically told her it was better than the original.
I’ve never been a Paramore fan, but I’ve never disliked them either. I’ve always kind of thought Hayley seemed cool and super talented, even though the majority of their music wasn’t really my style. I can appreciate talent and appeal.
I found their cover of “My Hero” on a compilation cover album called “Duck & Cover.” I really like how it sounds, and “My Hero” is one of my favorite Foo Fighters songs. It was a win-win. Enjoy!
I also have a cover they did of “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon for Live Lounge somewhere. Maybe I’ll post that sometime.
Ra Ra Riot - “Too Too Too Fast” (from “The Rhumb Line”)
"The Rhumb Line" was one of my top 10 favorite albums of 2008, and "Too Too Too Fast" was one of my favorite tracks. The day I created my personal Twitter account, I happened to be listening to this song, thus my Twitter name "joojoojoofast" was created. I had only heard that song twice by that point, but it quickly became a favorite.
Their newest album, “The Orchard,” is rather fantastic in its own way. I have both albums on vinyl and they sound even more incredible than the mp3/CD versions. I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU GO GET THESE ALBUMS ASAP.
I had the pleasure of seeing Ra Ra Riot open for Tegan and Sara + City and Colour in Toronto this August and they were amazing. I had already purchased my ticket to see them play this Saturday in Lawrence, so it made me even more excited for their headlining show. I have no doubt that Ra Ra Riot will be amazing this Saturday.
Key tracks: Too Too Too Fast, St. Peter’s Day Festival, Ghost Under Rocks, You And I Know, Do You Remember
City and Colour feat. Tegan and Sara - “At The Bird’s Foot” (live in Toronto)
This is a song Dallas Green (City and Colour) wrote about the oil spill. When I was at the concert in Toronto, Dallas played it and had Tegan and Sara come back out onstage to sing with him. It was GORGEOUS.
Someone recorded it, and here it is. This recording doesn’t do the experience justice. It was beyond amazing in person. This picture is actually from this performance (not taken by me):
